Billy Elliot The Musical

Based on the smash hit film, Billy Elliot the Musical is an inspirational story of one boy’s dream to realise his ambitions against the odds. Set in the North East of England against the background of the historic 1984/85 miners' strike, Billy pursues his passion for dance in secret to avoid disapproval of his struggling family.

Billy Elliot tells the story of an 11-year-old boy who lives in a close-knit mining community during the 1980s, when times were tough for the industry. However, Billy does not want to follow in his father's footsteps down the pits, but would rather pursue his ambition of becoming a world-famous dancer.Backed up by his dedicated teacher, Billy takes ballet lessons under cloak and dagger in order to avoid the prejudice he knows he will face should his secret come out.

Billy Elliot – The Musical reunites the team behind the award-wining 2000 film – director Stephen Daldry, writer Lee Hall, choreographer Peter Darling and producer Jon Finn – and adds to that the musical mastery of Sir Elton John, to turn the highly acclaimed film into an all-singing, all-dancing stage spectacular.

The musical opened in London's West End in 2005 and was nominated for nine Laurence Olivier Awards, winning four including Best New Musical. The success of Billy Elliot the Musical has led to productions in Australia, on Broadway and elsewhere. In New York, it won ten Tony Awards and ten Drama Desk Awards, including, in each case, best musical. It has also won numerous awards in Australia including a record-tying seven Helpmann Awards.
